That and the dog would be a little creepy. I fought the smoking battle a lot of years myself, with a lot of stops and starts; I could go through 3 packs in the intensity of the newspaper days. And started in journalism when reporters still had whiskey bottles under their desks. It was way, way different times when it came to smoking and drinking too, for that matter.

There’s cheap cost of living (MOST places here), and my simple and frugal living and a modest pension from Hearst Corp. newspaper days helps, a little bit of freelance writing and a healthy IRA Roth I can draw from without any tax or penalty for emergencies–also helps in my case.And no debt, no transportation but a motorcycle (for now, still holding out) and nobody in the world to support but myself. But you can live really well for little $ here, just depending on how much you want or need to spend. Food and housing is usually ridiculously cheap most places. I’m only a year and half away from SS age, btw. Maybe not as young as you might think. I could go ahead and pull the trigger on SS early and live like a king, but won’t, unless I just have to.

Very cool story. Kristen had the opportunity to “touch ole Nellie Belle” (the jeep) on a government trip when their museum was open – she says somewhere between Barstow and Ontario, lol. She was a little grossed looking at Roy’s horse and the dog (sorry names are slipping me) oh wasn’t Dale’s called Buttermilk? It closed a while back.

I can even imagine your dad – I’ve done the same with smoking and I guess there is somewhat of a brotherhood amongst the working class folks ( my past in electrical construction) but the spicy language sounds familiar and remembering back to some of the sayings. I told this one recently to “Cottonbowl” when the foreman gripes about the speed of the work it was often answered with “I only work at 2 speeds. If you don’t like this one I know you “blanket-blank” wouldn’t like the other.”

I did manage to stay clear of gambling!
